UWS Bankstown Euro® Paving Enhancement

Overview

The University of Western Sydney (UWS) has six campuses in the Greater Western Sydney region, Australia’s third largest economy behind Sydney’s CBD and Melbourne. UWS aims to be a source of creativity and a place that brings positive change to the lives of its students. As a part of their five year “Making a difference” strategy, the Capital Works and Facilities department managed over 350 projects in 2011 alone. One of these projects was the restoration and refurbishment of existing pathways and common areas at the UWS Bankstown Campus.

The project brief required a practical yet aesthetic paving and landscaping solution to reinvigorate the area and provide a fresh look to the paths and paved courtyards which are subject to high levels of pedestrian traffic.

“The courtyard upgrade for the Bankstown Campus of the University of Western Sydney began life as a large scale maintenance project but as the nature of the overhaul was to be extensive, this gave rise to the opportunity of a complete redesign”. Explains the Capital Works and Facilities department at UWS. The University of Western Sydney’s vision was for the “landscape to improve upon existing flow paths while maintaining and enhancing as much of the established garden, significant trees and softscape as possible”.

Product selection was vital to achieve the desired look and after a number of products were reviewed, over 1000m2 Euro® Honed pavers were selected. “Being a university, any proposed paving would need to have appropriate slip resistance, excellent longevity and from previous hardscape experience, we knew that a successful installation relied on having a dimensionally consistent product. The Euro® pavers had the best level of finish of the samples we reviewed” continued the University of Western Sydney.

Laying contractor A.J. Green World Landscaping has done an excellent job on the paving and landscaping with their professionalism a major contributor to the success and appeal of the end project. Euro® pavers aided the installation process with a representative of A.J. Green World Landscaping explaining “Our team were impressed with the quality of the pavers and the consistent size and thickness ensured they were easy to lay with fewer issues on site”. The end result looks great and has pleased both the client and the architect with the University of Western Sydney concluding “The finished courtyard was well received by the UWS executive and more importantly by the students and the space is already being used for Campus activities and as a rendezvous destination.”
