Broadmeadows Tanderrum Way Precinct

Overview

Tanderrum Way is a vibrant new public space and vehicle thoroughfare in the heart of the Broadmeadows Central Activities District. Tanderrum Way, a $3.6 million Hume City Council project has created a dynamic and energetic public space which caters for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. Strategically located to connect a range of public facilities, this body of works has become a catalyst for the continued redevelopment of Broadmeadow’s.

The streetscape’s unique aesthetic appeal was created using over 3000 square metres of Adbri Masonry’s concrete pavers. To enhance the pavers natural appeal, the products were honed to expose the aggregate and provide a premium surface texture which still exceeded all slip resistance criteria for outdoor pavements.

The 400 x 200 x 50mm Havenslab® and 200 x 200 x 50mm Havenpave® pavers where laid in a pixilated pattern with vibrant, warm colour tones used throughout the precinct. Damon Obst of Outlines Landscape Architecture remarked “The Adbri Masonry Designer Paving Range was selected for Tanderrum Way because it fitted with our design intent, which was to create warmth and interest though varied, but complimentary colour tones and textural quality”. The hard wearing concrete pavers were laid onto a 20mm rigid base which provided further stability ensuring optimum performance is maintained even when the streetscape is subjected to vehicular loads, an important requirement of the project. “We looked for a product that created an accessible, pedestrian space but had the durability and functionality for a vehicular environment, the Designer Paving Range satisfied this need” explains Damon.

As with all Adbri Masonry products, the Havenpave® and Havenslab® pavers have been tested in our N.A.T.A. accredited laboratory for quality and adherence to all relevant Australian Standards. These durable pavers were installed by Viewbank Paving. Director Travis Hammond commented “We were impressed with the consistency of the product which made it easier for our team to lay the product”.

The creation of this public space has been welcomed by the community with the streetscape, the recently completed Broadmeadows Secondary College and surrounding areas now a hive of activity. Tanderrum Way now exudes a robust sense of identity, which was part of the architect’s vision for the finished works with Damon concluding, “We’re very pleased with the finished result, which has delivered a high quality finish to an important public space”.
