Choosing and selecting bricks for your house - Why brick is best.
Bricks have many advantages over other materials for residential home construction. Adbri’s concrete bricks are Australian made from concrete so their built to last. Over the past five years, concrete bricks have become an increasingly popular choice for building new houses because they are available in a wide range of colours from white bricks, grey bricks through to black bricks, the colour goes all the way through the brick and they are environmentally friendly bricks to produce owing to the low energy input required to cure concrete bricks.
There are a number things to consider when choosing bricks for your house
- The design of your home – is it face brick throughout or is the brickwork used as a feature with other materials also used in the house?
- The brick colours and how they match your homes style – your brick home will be standing for a very long time so it’s important to make a good colour choice. Consider the colours of your roof, guttering and other façade features when picking a colour of brick.
- Budget and your price range for bricks – there are literally hundreds of styles and colours of bricks available and the prices for bricks varies for each of the different styles. You should ask for a quote on bricks or price guide when researching the brick choices for your build.

- What are concrete bricks used for?
Concrete bricks are mainly used for building walls, either as a brick veneer or double brick. They can also be used for pillars, landscaping features and more.
- Are concrete bricks fireproof?
Concrete bricks are resistant to fire. For full fire and sound ratings, we recommend checking the Fire and Sound Brochure for your state.
- Are concrete bricks waterproof?
Although concrete bricks are used as a facing material, we recommend sealing to improve the aesthetic appearance, maintenance and resistance to water penetration.
- Can concrete bricks be painted?
While concrete bricks can be painted with any paint recommended for use on masonry, the benefit of concrete bricks is that they can come in a variety of colours. That means if they chip, the colour beneath the surface is the same as the outer colour of the brick.
- Can concrete bricks be rendered?
Concrete bricks can be rendered. We even have a Render Brick made for this kind of application.
- How many concrete bricks do you need to build a house?
The average Australian brick veneer home would use around 6,000 to 8,000 concrete bricks to build.
- How do you clean concrete bricks?
Do not use hydrochloric acid when cleaning concrete bricks! Concrete masonry should only be pressure washed in accordance with the directions advised in the CMAA’s cleaning and Maintenance Guide (www.cmaa.com.au/technical)
- What mortar joint do you use for concrete bricks?
We recommend Iron/rolled joints for Adbri concrete bricks.
