Some of Adbri Masonry’s products are made with portions of reused industrial by-products, such as fly ash. By reintroducing these materials in the production process, we are able to safely recylce what would otherwise be waste.
With a life span often longer than that of their original project application, concrete segmental pavers are able to be pulled up and re-used in other projects. However if it is deemed that any concrete masonry is no longer suitable for reuse, masonry can also be recycled further through a crushing process creating an effective aggregate able to be utilised as road or sub base material.
Adbri Masonry’s range of Ecopave® permeable pavers assist in allowing water to filtrate through pavement surface layers, minimising stormwater run off, downstream flooding and pollution problems, with the added benefit of reducing the need for costly underground retention systems.
As seen in projects including Sydney’s Olympic Park, which utilised Eco-Trihex® in a range of colours, permeable pavers are a practical and effective solution to water management issues in Australia.
Products which use industrial by-products include our grey brick and Besser block ranges in NSW, QLD, SA and Tasmania. The use of these waster materials supports the circular economy without compromising the quality and integrity of our masonry products.
Benefits from incorporating post-industrial and post–consumer recycled materials in our bricks and blocks include:
Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM), including post-industrial recycled content such as granulated blast furnace slags, fly ash, and blended cements have been used as a substitute for ordinary Portland cement in concrete masonry.
In the past three years, Adbri Masonry has achieved substitution rates of up to 60% in some product ranges and is continually striving to integrate these efficiencies to all products produced.
Adbri Masonry’s controlled production process allow the use alternative aggregates such as post-industrial bi-products, including furnace bottom ash and crusher fines to be introduced as a significant part of our masonry production.
