Imagine a century-old cottage, steeped in history, now transformed into a contemporary haven for a nature-loving family. This is the story of Weather House, nestled in the heart of Melbourne’s Northcote, a project that received a High Commendation at the esteemed Think Brick Awards 2023 in the Kevin Borland Masonry Award category.
Originally built in the early 1900s, Weather House underwent a remarkable renovation, blending traditional charm with modern functionality. Collaborating closely with Mihaly Slocombe Architects, homeowners Claire and Brent saw their vision come to life—a home that celebrates their love for nature while offering flexibility for their growing family.
“Weather House is a love letter to the outdoors,” says Erica Slocombe, Principal Architect at Mihaly Slocombe Architects. “It’s a rich, durable environment infused with the grounded ambience of being in nature.”
Situated amidst charming cottages, Weather House strikes a balance between preserving its historical frontage and embracing a contemporary rear extension. The dark metal-clad extension harmonizes with the original roofline, creating a seamless transition between old and new.
Step inside, and you’re greeted by a double-height extension that captures the essence of the outdoors. The interior palette features tactile materials like blackbutt timber and concrete, creating a timeless foundation complemented by unique brick patterns that ascend toward the ceiling, drawing the eye upward and connecting the ground-floor spaces with the first floor.
One of the key aspects of Weather House’s design was the use of Australian-made materials. The Adbri Masonry brick range played a pivotal role in achieving the desired aesthetic and durability. “When looking for the perfect brick, we were after one that was light-coloured and tonally consistent en masse,” explains Erica. The Adbri Masonry bricks fit the bill perfectly, allowing us to create the brick patterning we envisioned.
Every detail in Weather House reflects a thoughtful approach to design. From patterned concrete brickwork to textured terrazzo and warm Australian timbers, each element enriches the space with practicality and beauty. The ground-floor bathroom, with its removable slatted timber shower base and terrazzo details, exudes luxury and functionality.
The connection with nature is further emphasized by large windows that flood the living spaces with natural light, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living. A double-sided fireplace adds warmth and ambience, creating a campfire atmosphere in the courtyard—a perfect spot for family gatherings.
Upstairs, sage tones dominate the main bedroom and study area, creating a moodiness that enhances rest and relaxation. Curtains and sliding doors lead to a private deck, inviting the outdoors into the living space.
Weather House is not just a home; it’s a tribute to Mother Nature. With its contemporary extension and lush surroundings, it embodies the feeling of camping at home—a testament to the enduring bond between architecture and the great outdoors.
