SILICA DUST AND CONCRETE MASONRY PRODUCTS – CAUTION

Silica, often referred to as quartz, is a very common mineral found in many naturally occurring materials and used in many industrial products including concrete masonry.

Silica dust can be created by cutting, grinding, drilling or otherwise disturbing these materials which contain crystalline silica particles. These dust particles are very small and cannot be seen . This reparable silica dust can be harmful and may cause respiratory issues and serious illness .

Safety precautions and the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment are required when undertaking activities which may create silica dust. As silica dust is a hazardous substance, it must be managed with the appropriate controls. Respiratory protective equipment should be used in conjunction with water suppression or mechanical dust extraction units when masonry products are being modified on site.

During and on completion of works, any accumulated dust should be dampened with water and swept up or vacuumed with a suitable device before being responsibly disposed of.
